Dr. Susan Nelson
Chair, LaPOST Coalition

Dr. Susan Nelson is chairwoman of the LaPOST Coalition, a network of Louisiana health care professionals raising awareness of the Louisiana Physician Orders for Scope of Treatment (LaPOST) document.

Board certified in internal medicine, geriatrics and hospice and palliative medicine, she serves as Medical Director of Senior Services at Franciscan Missionaries of Our Lady Health System and Franciscan PACE.

Dr. Nelson is a fellow of the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine and the American College of Physicians as well as an advocate for senior health. She works with the Louisiana State Medical Society Council on Public Health and the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals. In addition, she is the Vice-Chair of the National Physician Orders for Life Sustaining Treatment (POLST) Paradigm Task Force and its Executive Committee and serves on the Board of Directors for the Louisiana Health Care Quality Forum.

A University of Houston graduate, Dr. Nelson earned a medical degree from the University of Texas Medical School at Houston (UTMSH), where she also completed her residency and served as chief resident. While at UTMSH, she was an assistant professor in the department of internal medicine.
