Dr. Susan Nelson
Chair, LaPOST Coalition

Dr. Susan Nelson is chairwoman of the LaPOST Coalition, a network of Louisiana health care professionals raising awareness of the LaPOST document a set of portable medical orders for those with a life limiting illness.

Board certified in internal medicine, geriatrics and hospice and palliative medicine, she serves as System Chair, Palliative Medicine and Supportive Care as well as Bioethics, Ochsner Health. She is also medical director, palliative care, Ochsner Health Network.

Dr. Nelson is a fellow of the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine and the American College of Physicians as well as an advocate for senior health. She works with the Louisiana Department of Health on projects related to dementia and care of older adults in the community as well as long term care and assisted living facilities. In addition, she is the President Elect of the National POLST Collaborative.

A University of Houston graduate, Dr. Nelson earned a medical degree from the University of Texas Medical School at Houston (UTMSH), where she also completed her residency and served as chief resident. While at UTMSH, she was an assistant professor in the department of internal medicine.
